01 · Context

The Challenge

Viral Misinformation on Social Media: The accelerated spread of fake news on Twitter posed a critical challenge to digital trust and informed decision-making for citizens.

Cognitive Biases and Automatic Sharing: Users tend to automatically share content due to inattention and biases such as confirmation bias and availability bias, without consciously verifying information.

Need for Empirical Data: Rigorous microscopic behavioral data collection was required to understand these dynamics and design effective digital interventions.

02 · Design

The Solution

Application of Irrational Labs' behavioral design methodology to map the user interaction journey with misinformation content on Twitter.

  1. 01

Real-time Behavioral Diagnosis: Systematic observation and recording of friction points and triggers that drive the virality of false content.

  2. 02

Mapping Decision Biases: Identification of psychological barriers that prevent deliberate information verification before sharing.

  3. 03

Support for Hypothesis Formulation: Processing findings to assist the design team in creating interventions aimed at closing the intention-action gap for users on the platform.

My Role

Research Assistant working closely with the behavioral science teams at Irrational Labs and Duke University. I was responsible for executing shifts dedicated to monitoring and analyzing behavioral dynamics on Twitter, structured documentation of interactions, and collecting key qualitative data to feed into the project's behavioral diagnostic models.

04 · Results

Results

The research resulted in a published field study demonstrating that direct corrections reduce electoral misinformation among super-spreaders on Twitter.

  • Full Compliance with Research Plan: 100% of committed hours, accumulating over 100 hours of technical research and project alignment meetings.

  • Digital Behavior Systematization: 100% of behavioral reports and qualitative inputs delivered on time, facilitating the academic and consulting teams in designing controlled experiments.

  • Academic Publication: Findings informed the paper *Reducing Misinformation Online through Corrections: A Twitter Field Study* (Hopkins & Sherlock, Duke University's Center for Advanced Hindsight, 2022).
